XMP & LRcat

Using XMP & Lightroom Catalog Files

XMP and Lightroom Catalogs (LRcat) are "sidecar" files and only contain editing data, and not they original images. Think of them as instructions for your computer on how to edit the images. When you've paired them up with the images on your end, it will be as if we had done the edits on your computer. The LRcat files we send can be opened in Lightroom 4 or 5, and the XMPs in any version of Lightroom, Bridge, or Photoshop. Note that while RAW files work with either of these methods, JPG or DNG files must use the LRcat method as they don't render XMP files. If you have submitted your order with Smart Previews, you will likely be able to skip step 3.

Lightroom Catalog in Lightroom 4 or 5

  1. Download an unzip the file you were sent.
  2. Double click the LRcat to open it in Lightroom.
  3. Locate the "missing" files on your computer by either:
    1. Click on a question mark on an image thumbnail (while in grid mode) and locating the file in question on your hard drive. LR will find all other images in this folder. Repeat if necessary ( for multiple folders).
    2. On the folder section of the left tab, right click the missing folder name (either IMAGES or FINALS) and choose "Locate missing folder." Locate the folder on your hard drive.
  4. Let the preview images render. To force all of them to render, choose "Render Standard Sized Previews" from the Library menu.

If you would like to import our edited catalog into another existing catalog, follow the directions below.

  1. Follow steps 1, 2, and 3 in the instructions above.
  2. Switch to your main catalog that you want to import into.
  3. Click File > Import from Another Catalog
  4. Navigate to and select the catalog you received from Fotofafa and opened in step 1.
  5. Images that already exist in the main catalog will be updated with our edits, while other images will be imported and updated.

XMP files in Lightroom 2, 3, 4, or 5

  1. Place the XMPs in the same folder as the corresponding RAW files.
  2. In Lightroom, select all images then choose "Read Metadata from Files" from the "Metadata" menu.
  3. Let the preview images render.

XMP files in Bridge

  1. Place the XMPs in the same folder as the corresponding RAW files.
  2. Open Bridge & refresh all thumbnails (F5).
  3. To view edit data, open the file with Camera Raw (Command + R)
